The design of steel trusses is a frequent problem in civil engineering, which requires the experience of the design engineer to achieve a structural solution with good performance and that can satisfy the established needs. In recent years, the design of these systems has been supported by the application of various methods of optimization, which allow optimal solutions, meeting the proposed design objectives, automatically and in a shorter time. This research presents the application of a series of multiobjective metaheuristic algorithms for the automatic design of large-scale trusses. The NSGA-II, MOPSO and AMOSA algorithms were applied and the structures reported in the literature were considered to be made up of a high number of elements. The performance of the algorithms was evaluated based on the computational cost, the hypervolume criterion and the behavior that the algorithms have when increasing the amount of iterations per optimization cycle. The search space used in the optimization was discrete, restricted by the W steel profiles available in the Colombian market. The results obtained show that, for the proposed problems, the MOPSO algorithm is the most efficient, followed by the AMOSA and the NSGA-II which showed a higher computational cost. Finally, it is worth mentioning that the calculation times were less than one hour, for trusses close to a thousand elements. Damage detection by structure\'s dynamic response: an analytical study with applications to beam type structures
The purpose of this work is to study dynamic methods for damage detection in beam structures. The attention is devoted to the methods based on dynamically measured flexibility. The reviewed methods are part of Nondestructive Damage Detection techniques (NDD). In the NDD techniques the damage is determined through the comparison between the undamaged and damaged state of the structure. In this work the inverse vibration problem is presented and the structure\'s flexibility matrix calculated from his modal parameters. The Finite Elements Model (FEM) is employed to show that a clear pattern exist for the changes in the flexibility matrix produced due to the presence of damage. The flexibility matrix changes is used to identify and locate damage as indicated by the several examples presented

Hybrid algorithm for damage detection: a heuristic approach
In this study, a new auto configured Particle Swarm Optimization - Simplex algorithm for damage detection has been proposed. The formulation of the objective function for the minimization problem is based on the frequency response functions (FRFs) and the modal parameters of the system. A novel strategy for the control of the Particle Swarm Optimization (PSO) parameters based on the Nelder-Mead algorithm (Simplex method) is presented; consequently, the convergence of the PSOS becomes independent of the heuristic constants and its stability and accuracy are enhanced. The formulated hybrid method performs better in different benchmark functions than the Simulated Annealing (SA), the Genetic Algorithm (GA) and the basic PSO. Several damage identification problems, taking into consideration the effects of noisy and incomplete data, were studied. In these cases, the damage location and extent were determined successfully. Finally, using the PSOS, a non-linear oscillator (Duffing oscillator) was identified with good results

This paper describes some of the most important aspects related to thenumerical experimentation of a hybrid of the algorithm PSO (Particle Swarm Optimization) with the traditional modified simplex method of NelderMead. The hybridization of these two techniques of optimization without restrictions was carried out with a topology that allows to optimize in each iteration the parameters of the algorithm PSO using the modified simplex method. Numerical experiments with this hybrid algorithm were carried out and applied to several of typical test functions to establish its effectiveness. The results obtained were compared with the simplex and the quadratic methods, which turned out to be very satisfactory since the point of view of their repeatability and reproducibility, although the time of computation was considerablylonger. It stands out itself, nevertheless, that the precision of the hybrid algorithm was a hundred percent in allthe trials for thetest functions selectedEste artÃculo describe algunos de los aspectos más importantes relacionados con la experimentación numérica de un hÃbrido del algoritmo PSO (Particle Swarm Optimization) con el tradicional método simplex modificado de Nelder-Mead.
